Where Does PLA Polylactic Acid Come From? Bio-Based Compostable Material
Polylactic Acid, short for PLA, is the most widely used bio-based compostable material for food packaging and disposable tableware. Unlike conventional petroleum plastics, PLA is made from renewable farm crops instead of fossil fuels.
Raw materials of PLA mainly include starch-rich plants: corn, cassava and sugarcane. Manufacturers extract natural plant starch first, then ferment starch with microbes to produce lactic acid monomers. After polymerization, lactic acid molecules link together to form high-molecular PLA resin pellets.
The whole production chain cuts reliance on oil resources, and its carbon footprint is over 70% lower than traditional plastic. When discarded under industrial composting conditions, PLA fully breaks down into CO₂ and water within 3–6 months, joining the natural carbon cycle without permanent plastic waste.
